MISEREOR Germany supports Yayasan Harapan Sumba (YHS) again to continue empowering people with disabilities in the program “Inclusive Strenghtening of Persons with Disabilities facing a New Normal Era in 5 Communities in Southwest Sumba”.
This program is a development of the previous program with the same location and target group, namely 25 people with disabilities (PwDs) and 25 local stakeholders in 5 villages namely Weerame and Kalingara (Wewewa Tengah Sub-district), Lolo Ole (West Wewewa Sub-district) and Wewela and Homba Karipit (North Kodi Sub-district).
By using an inclusive approach, this empowerment program for PwDs fully involves local stakeholders so that the aspirations of change desired and fought for by PwDs are placed as the aspirations and responsibilities of all parties at the local level where PwDs live.
The involvement and role of local stakeholders is aimed at strengthening and contributing fully to the realization of the empowerment of PwDs. Once empowered, PwDs will be facilitated to build small groups based on their interests, passion and potential in various sectors, namely economy, education, health, tourism, arts and the environment according to important issues and agendas of the local community.
Some of the main activities supported are promotion and dissemination of information related to social rights and inclusion, capacity building and economic empowerment. Activities that are different from the previous ones are exhibitions and competitions for skills and products of PwDs, documentation and publication of good practices through books and videos, publication of newsletters and online information portals for information dissemination and publication of good practices.
In this program, MISEREOR also supports YHS in improving financial management and organizational development. MISEREOR’s support for YHS had started one year earlier and greatly assisted YHS in the development and independence of the organization.
This 2-year program (April 2021-March 2023) is funded by MISEREOR Germany and donations from Catherine Rox Donrberg (wife of Ulrich Dornberg, former Country Officer of MISEREOR for Indonesia). The total fund is EUR 105,000 (EUR 95,000 from MISEREOR and EUR 10,000 from Catherine Rox).
