2019 is the 10th year Solidari’Terre students (from the Emylon Business School and Ecole Centrale de Lyon) have come to help an impoverished community in Sumba. This year 16 students came to work with us.
During 11 working days from 9 to 23 July 2019, the students worked hand in hand with YHS and residents of Lolo Ole village to build a community learning house. The building is 40 m² and is complete with toilet and water tank.
Besides the learning house, the students build simple toilets in 3 other hamlets. They also played sports with the children, attended the village church, helped to pick the tamarind crop and were the stars of high school competitions about France.
On Saturdays and Sundays, students visited traditional villages and waterfalls and Sumba’s beautiful beaches.

Support from the Village Government and Leaders
The successful completion of all the activities was due to the enthusiastsic participation and support of the government and residents of Lolo Ole, who provided the local building materials (wood, bamboo and stone), donations of money and food, as well as labor and craftsmen.
Every working day, residents and children were busy working with the students in an atmosphere of friendship, jokes and laughter. Sincethey had no common language, they communicated mostly through sign language, although the students were quick to learn basic words and the children had fun learing a few words of English.
At the farewell for the students, there were hugs and tears fromboth residents and students, and especially the children who had made firm bonds of friendship. Thank you students for your help and togetherness with us. We wish you all success in your studies and future careers.
