Physical limitations often hamper social interaction and opportunities to develop and participate in social life. But this does not apply to 21 year-old Andi Gracia Tanggela. Andi’s right hand, fingers and spine are not normal. His right eye is slightly small and his cleft palate is affecting his speech.
Andi is a very poor subsistence farmer. His mother is deaf and speech impaired as are two of his seven siblings, Nofriande aged 13 and Aliando aged 5.
His family lives in desa Tematana Village, Wewewa Barat, Sumba Barat Daya Regency.
Andi Different Figure
Does Andi feel nferior? Is he confined at home, bullied and lamenting his fate? The answer is NO! From childhood Andi was always top at school, had high self-confidence and was active in community, campus and religious activities. He is now in the second semester of Stimikom Stella Maris university in Waikabubak (Management and Computer school). He also has a music teacher on campus. and is a skilled guitarist, organist and percussionist.
Not only has he achieved all this; Andi is widely known in the community as person who likes to help. He often volunteers in his community, village and church. Andi consistently helps his parents work in their fields, he grows flowers and keeps the house and its surroundings always clean and beautiful.
Andi is a rare figure. Usually people with disabilities experience physical or psychological suffering in the form of ill-treatment from others, feelings of insignificance and anticipating a bleak future. Andi is just the opposite, and whatever he achieves he wants to share with othrs.
